High-Frequency Monitoring to Estimate Loads and Identify Nutrient Transport Dynamics in the Little Auglaize River, Ohio

New technologies allow for the in situ monitoring of nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus, water systems at increasingly higher temporal frequencies. These near-continuous quality, which can potentially provide new perspectives on variations nutrient concentrations transport dynamics, ultimately supporting more targeted sustainable management. The current study investigated utility nitrate-N soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) using wet analytical chemistry one year 2-h intervals a small agricultural watershed located northwestern Ohio. While we saw large variability estimated loads due to daily high-temporal resolution concentrations, were fundamentally driven by high-flow events this watershed. Concentration–discharge relations then developed help identify how nutrients are stored released over time scales ranging from low-flow seasonal responses event-driven storms. patterns concentration–discharge indicated potential shift timing mobilization SRP event scale course year. results suggest that SRP-targeted management practices would need intercept dominant delivery pathways watershed, such as tile drainage runoff, reduce loading. For nitrate-N, revealed an increased response, was seen during growing season with conditions, indicating role biological uptake instreams across lowest flows Collectively, high-frequency data monitored individual seasons offer guidance decisions while allowing us track progress toward quality goals.
